The Gallery
Every piece tagged Arts lands here in its own full frame — photography, audio, and video shown large, with a download and a shareable link, instead of buried in the scroll of the Wall. Check "🎨 Tag as Art" on the Home tab when you post a piece to send it here too.
The Scriptorium
Longer reflections, notices, and write-ups — set apart from the scroll of the Wall. Check "📝 Tag as Scriptorium" on the Home tab to send a post here too. The first line of your post becomes its title.
Start a Group
A group is its own small wall — for a class, a project, or a study circle. Anyone can create up to 7.
All Groups
Every group tagged into The Cloister — join the ones that fit.

Announce an Event
Upcoming & Past Events
RSVP so others know who's coming. Please confirm by emails, call/text or other communication channels.
Encrypted Message Engine
Establish a cryptographic NIP-44 v2 tunnel by providing the recipient's public key identifier.
The Circle Room
A shared encrypted room for everyone who holds the circle passphrase — set once, unlocked with it from any device. Distinct from your personal nsec passphrase.
First time here? Enter any passphrase to found the room, then share that same phrase with the others in your circle — whoever enters it first sets it for everyone.
Point-to-Point Room Vector
Hardware communication and document distribution bypass relays entirely, operating exclusively peer-to-peer.
Channel Disconnected
Secure File Injection Center
Images, video, audio, or PDFs. Sent peer-to-peer instantly during a live call — or, if there's no live connection, uploaded via Blossom and delivered as an encrypted message link instead. Note: This feature may not function as expected.
Drag down local objects or browse directories manually
Take up a key
Your keypair is your admission — nobody issues it, nobody can revoke it. Generated entirely on this device; nothing is sent anywhere until you post.

What The Cloister is
The first Cloister was a single quiet room kept by a monk in the Himalayas — a place to speak freely,
write things down, and trust that no one was listening who shouldn't be. This is that room, rebuilt in code:
your identity is a keypair no company issues and no company can take back, your posts travel over the open
nostr protocol instead of a company's database, and your private words are sealed with
NIP-44 encryption before they ever leave your device. Relays carry the signal; they never hold the key.
*Disclaimer: "The Cloister is a non‑custodial interface for the Nostr protocol. We do not host, moderate, control, or delete any user content—that power resides entirely with independent relays and the users who publish their own signed events. All users are solely and fully responsible for their words and actions. By using this app, you accept that your speech is your own legal liability, and you release us from any claim arising from content you or others publish." We cannot control, censor, or delete anything you post—you alone own and are legally liable for every word you publish.

Protected, and not protected
Protected — the content of your direct messages and call signaling: ChaCha20 encryption, HMAC-SHA256 authentication, HKDF-SHA256 key derivation (NIP-44 v2). Relays only ever see ciphertext.
Not protected — metadata. Relays can see your IP, activity timing, and your public key on every event. For real unlinkability, route this through Tor or a trusted VPN.
Not protected — files sent when there's no live call. Only the link is NIP-44 encrypted; the file itself is uploaded in the clear to a Blossom server (blossom.primal.net / blossom.band) and is unencrypted at rest there, reachable by anyone who has or guesses the link. Files sent during a live call go directly peer-to-peer and never touch a server at all.
Search
Find a person, a group, or a post — by name, by npub or hex pubkey, by a note1 post id, or by a Nostr address (
name@domain). Name/text search only looks through what's already loaded on this device; an exact npub, note id, or address is looked up directly.Saved
Posts you've kept for a slower re-read — stored on this device only, never shared.
Quiet Hours
Mute OS-level notifications during a window you choose. Everything still arrives in the app — your phone just won't buzz.
Relays
Default relays are shared by everyone here. Add one of your own for extra redundancy — it stays local to this device.
Weekly Reflection
A quiet recurring question shown at the top of Home, the same for everyone this week.
Local Cache
The Feed, Arts, Scriptorium, and (once unlocked) Circle Room are cached on this device so reopening the app shows something instantly instead of a blank screen while relays reconnect. Nothing here is sent anywhere — it's purely local, and safe to clear any time.
Sovereignty Backup
Export your key, relays, bookmarks, and Circle Room passphrase as one encrypted file — everything needed to rebuild your presence here on a fresh device, protected by a backup passphrase you choose. Keep the file and the passphrase separately; either alone is useless.
Your Profile
This is a signed
kind 0 event, broadcast to relays so other Nostr clients can show your name too — not just The Cloister.Muted
Muting is personal and local to your own view — like Nostr's NIP-51 mute lists. It only filters what
you see; it can never remove a post from the network or stop anyone
else from seeing it. The Cloister has no admin who can approve, ban, or purge anyone — that would go
against what an open protocol is for. ***Visit Cloister Guide: https://cloister-guide.pages.dev
